Description
A Fine Louis XVI Period Commode with Marquetry and Ormolu Mounts, circa 1780
A fine late 18th-century Louis XVI period commode, beautifully veneered in various fruitwoods with geometric parquetry panels and stringing. The rectangular Brèche d’Alep marble top above three long drawers, each framed with gilt-bronze beading and fitted with finely chased ormolu mounts in neoclassical motifs. The chamfered corners feature superbly cast gilt-bronze mounts with classical drapery motifs, and the whole raised on tapering legs with ormolu sabots. This elegant commode exemplifies the restrained symmetry and refined craftsmanship of the Louis XVI period, combining architectural precision with richly figured veneers and ormolu mounts of excellent quality.
