Continental School, Early 19th Century “Napoléon et sa famille”
Oil on metal, 17.50 x 26 cm in a giltwood frame size: 30 x 38.50 cm.
A richly detailed oil on metal painting depicting Napoleon Bonaparte and members of his family, including his brothers Joseph and Jérôme, his mother Letizia Ramolino, and sister Pauline Bonaparte. The scene captures an emotionally resonant moment where the family gazes at a portrait of Napoleon’s son, L’Aiglon (the nickname of Napoleon II, Duke of Reichstadt). The artist has rendered the figures in ornate military and period attire, framed by a neoclassical interior filled with books, a globe, and a bust—alluding to imperial power and Enlightenment ideals.
A handwritten note on the verso identifies the sitters and the scene.
Verso: Inscription in French identifying the figures, with gallery label from Arthur Yockins, London.
Condition:
Appears to be in good overall condition with only minor surface wear consistent with age.
