Description
Philhellenic mantel clock with Greek warrior figure, 19th century
A finely cast and patinated bronze mantel clock surmounted by a standing Greek warrior, depicted in traditional attire, likely representing a hero of the Greek War of Independence. The figure is shown in a dynamic stance, dressed in fustanella and cloak, holding weapons, and set upon a naturalistic base.
The circular enamel dial with Roman numerals is integrated into the rocky base beneath the figure. The clock rests on a rectangular plinth with applied decorative elements in gilt bronze, combining classical and romantic stylistic features typical of Philhellenic European production of the 19th century.
Such clocks were produced in Western Europe, particularly in France, reflecting the strong Philhellenic movement and admiration for the Greek struggle for independence.
