An original costume design for the Broadway musical Annie, depicting Annie and the orphan girls in a group study, with individual costume variations and annotations relating to the orphanage scenes. The drawing captures both the movement of the young performers and the distinctive period character of the costumes devised for the production.
The original Broadway production of Annie opened at the Alvin Theatre, New York, on 21 April 1977. The musical became one of the major Broadway successes of its era, running for more than 2,300 performances. Aldredge’s costume designs, including Annie’s now-iconic red dress, became closely associated with the visual identity of the character and the production.

    Catalogue Notes
Theoni Vachlioti Aldredge was one of the most distinguished costume designers of the 20th century, working extensively across Broadway, film and opera. Born in Thessaloniki and later based in the United States, she developed a career spanning more than four decades and created costumes for some of the most celebrated theatrical and cinematic productions of her generation.
Her work for Annie ranks among her most recognisable achievements. The production established an instantly identifiable visual language for the musical’s characters, most famously through Annie’s red dress and the contrasting, deliberately worn and varied costumes created for the orphan girls. Aldredge received the Tony Award for Best Costume Design for Annie, reinforcing the production’s place among the landmark works of her Broadway career.
